Spitalfields has become one of London’s main markets and has attracted quite a following. The original buildings which date back to Victorian times and the original market hall have been fully restored with two thirds of the market rebuilt with the intention of housing restaurants and shops plus an arts and craft market which is called the Traders market.

Popular for fashion, arts and crafts and the general market it is open seven days a week and does get busy at weekends.

Brick Lane

Now popular with London’s artistic crowd, Brick Lane is well know for an abundance of Art Galleries and restaurants not to mention many festivals throughout the year. Sundays can be particularly special as the shops are open but the area gets the added bonus of a street market style atmosphere with many great finds to be bought. Street entertainment is also popular so its certainly not dull.

Artists across the world use this area as a base to paint alongside fabulous street art created by everyone from Banksy to D*Face and Ben Eine plus vido shoots by bands, ‘The Killers’ to mention one.

This area was also the cene of jack the Ripper murders and the notorious pub Ten Bells is still there today.

Petticoat market

A few hundred yards south of Old Spitalfields Market is Petticoat Market, formally recognised as a market in 1936 but it dates back many years before making it one of the oldest surviving markets in Britain.

It is open from Mon - Fri and located on Wentworth Street but on a Sunday it can stretch over far more of the surrounding streets and can be as large as 1000 stalls so something to behold. It is closed on a Saturday and on a Sunday only stays on until 2 in the afternoon so get there early.
